/ CASE STUDY
NOMADLY is an app that helps connect digital nomads and expats with other like-minded nomads as they travel or move to new places.
THE OBJECTIVE was to create a digital solution to help nomads connect and build deeper friendships by going through new experiences together.
Role: 9 weeks | UX/UI Designer | Tools: Figma, Pen & Paper
of digital nomads say that loneliness or islolation is their number one issue
of expats have felt isolated in their time abroad
CDC report the impact loneliness & isolation will have:
> Increase risk of premature death
> 50% percent increased risk of dementia
> Higher rates of depression, anxiety, and suicide
> 29% increased risk of heart disease
> 32% increased risk of stroke
HOW MIGHT WE...
help expats or digital nomads build and maintain close relationships and feel less lonely when moving or travelling to new places?
/ MARKET RESEARCH
Into looking to see what currently exists in the market, I found that most platforms for digital nomads were used for communication and information exchange related to planning their next move, visas or tax information.
I found that these main platforms gave the opportunity for quick yet surface level connections.
I also looked at apps that focused on events such as meetup.com, eventbrite as well as the Soho House. None of these combine curated events and ways to connect with other nomads or expats with the exception of the Soho House. However, due to the exclusivity of Soho House’s membership and it;’s high cost I felt there is a whitespace for individuals who want to make meaningful connections without the high price tag to get them.
I believe that if expats or digital nomads worked towards building deeper relationships with friends they make in their life abroad but also make the effort to maintain relationships back home, they will feel far less lonely. I will know I’m right if expats or digital nomads begin to prioritise making meaningful strong relationships with those they connect with in their travels.
/ INTERVIEW & INSIGHTS
For the Interview Method & Participant Criteria I had conducted 5 zoom interviews Questions comprised a mix of open-ended and specific for deeper insight. I interviewed Millenials digital nomads or expats as they are the largest cohort of 42%.
& Participant Criteria
> 5 zoom interviews
> Questions comprised a mix of open-ended and specific.
> Millennials male and female (24-40)
> Interviewees live as expats or digital nomads in one to multiple cities/countries per year
through travel or scheduling calls/video
Ian is an American digital nomad currently living and working in Istanbul, Turkey with the intension to travel across Europe and eventually into Asia. He has spent the past 6 months in Spain and met a few other nomads he connected with, however some have since left but a couple decided to stay.
Work has been extremely busy and all consuming. He really likes his new friends, and wants to maintain these friendships to build a deeper connnection. He’s trying to keep in touch but struggles to and needs to schedule the time in. He also needs reasons to hang out and build a deeper friendships organically.

/ PRIMARY TASK FLOW
The persona, Ian, sees a notification on his friend Kim’s profile image. He clicks into it to open a popup that informs him that his friend Kim has shared her travel itinerary to Istanbul so that Ian can reach out to connect with her durring her visit.
/ SECONDARY TASK FLOW
After Ian reaches out to his friend Kim, confirming he would like to connect while she is in town, he sends her a ‘local’ weekend event for her to join him on.
Initial Sketches - Group meditation section
Sketches after User Testing - Connecting with friend in town & sharing event
Sharing event - with friend & adding to calendar
For the UI Inspiration I wanted to continue the minimalistic aesthetic, rounded edges and outline.
/ USER TESTING FEEDBACK, VERSION 1
2 rounds of user testing consisting of 5 individuals each test.
One major feedback from instructors I was keen on implementing was the group meditation pages as a feature. there wasnt a clear connection on how this would counteract loneliness so this was replaced with a feature to connect with nomad friends who vising.
After sorting and implementing the user testing feedback to my wireframes, I finalized the prototype in Figma.
/ USER TESTING FEEDBACK,VERSION 2
/ VISUAL IDENTITY
In my preliminary research, Digital Nomads expressed their desire for ‘Slow Travel’ which consisted of more long term travel, thoughtful consideration for deciding where to move to next, and the need to create a sense of home through meaningful connections with other nomads or locals.
